Couey Named JA’s Blitz 16 Scholar Athlete

Congratulations to our WAPT Blitz 16 scholar-athlete, Camille Couey! Last Thursday, Camille was honored during the Blitz 16 scholar athlete luncheon held at the Capitol Club and sponsored by Bank Plus.  A member of the Cum Laude Society, National Honor Society, and numerous subject honor societies, Camille was selected for this honor based on her outstanding performance on the court and field with JA’s varsity basketball and soccer teams, and her excellent performance in the classroom. She was recently named Miss JA and will attend The University of Mississippi as a member of The Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College in the fall.

The senior credits her success in large part to her parents’ support, saying, “They always kept me determined, always held me to a high standard.” Coach Jan Sojourner and Camille’s friends and teammates also inspired her to strive for excellence, especially in the face of challenges. When seven seniors graduated and left the basketball team in 2017, the team’s immediate future seemed bleak. “Everyone thought that we weren’t going to be that good,” she recalls, “but it was kind of good to have underdog mentality.” The team worked hard and won the AAAA-D1 state championship in her junior year. Last fall, she completed her final season with the Lady Raiders varsity soccer team as they took home their third consecutive state title. In March, a fourth consecutive AAAA-D1 state championship brought her career with the Lady Raider’s to a victorious end.

While remaining engaged in a challenging course load, Camille looks forward to the new experiences on her horizon. As a member of the honors college she will participate in relatively small, discussion-based classes, similar to classes she has experienced at JA, and hopes to take advantage of opportunities to study abroad. “I think it’s going to be harder, but it will make me a better student,” she said.
