In 2019 alone, there have been at least 17 mass shootings, leading to countless losses of innocent lives. Gun violence in America is certainly not new, but there has been a significant increase in incidents over the last few years. From the massacre at Sandy Hooks Elementary School in 2012, to the recent shooting in El Paso, it seems like Americans wake up to tragic news almost every day. The relatively regular shootings have sparked a fierce debate over how to stop these tragedies.
Most talk about how to resolve these shootings boils down to gun control. America’s current gun control system is weaker in comparison to other countries, but precautions are still taken for those seeking to buy firearms. Advocates of gun control argue that stricter regulations will lead to less criminals having access to lethal weaponry. However, opponents of stricter gun control assert that it is a direct violation of freedom and the Second Amendment. They also argue that criminals are going to gain access to weapons regardless, so guns can be a form of self- defense.
Gun violence in America has also opened up discussion about mental health. Many of the shooters suffered from mental illnesses before they committed the act of violence. Some claim that the lack of sufficient help for those with mental illnesses, not gun control, is to blame for the recent atrocities. Specifically, they have been criticizing video games for glorifying violence. Games like Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty are cited as examples of games where the player can shoot whomever they want with little repercussions, which advocates claim can lead to players desiring to act out these actions in real life.
Regardless of which side is true, all sides can agree that these shootings are horrific and that a solution needs to be found as soon as possible. The discussion around how to prevent these shootings has made a large impact on politics and the daily lives of everyone. For example, Walmart has recently refused to advertise any violent video games within their stores, siding with the mental health approach to stopping shootings. Gun control is now a key issue for politicians, and is one of the most common points of discussion for debates. The mass shootings have ushered in a new era for America. The political spectrum has focused its attention on a rising crisis that has yet to be resolved. Over the next couple of years, America will have to take action and find a solution to stop these atrocities.
