Carl Tart, senior and executive director of Students Activities Association, is not only the first homecoming king that Ole Miss has ever crowned, but he is African-American. Most notably, in 1962, white students protested James Meredith, a prospective African- American student, enrolling at the university; he subsequently became the first African- American student to attend Ole Miss. Some hope that this homecoming sets a precedent of kindness and tolerance that sheds light on the history of race at Ole Miss.
