Bashing in the Band

from Issue 6

This past Saturday, the Jackson Academy marching band finished out their season on home turf. Collecting all superiors with their show, On the River, the band were commended for percussion, guard, drum major, and overall band.

However, this was the most minor of their awards—on 28 September at Linn-Marr High School, they received fourth place in their division out of eight bands, and later that night, at Marion High School, they won first place in band and color guard. The next Saturday, they won first place color guard in their division at Copiah Academy. Their hard work, which started in mid-July with two grueling weeks of marching and learning the new set of music, certainly did pay off.

The band director is Todd Taylor, the percussion instructor is Jeremy Burnham, and the guard instructor is Claire Watts. The drum major this year was Wes Thomas, the color guard captains were Lili Alford and Rosemary Caldwell, and the drum captains were Charlie Earl and Carter Elliott. Selections performed in the show were “Father of Waters,” “Proud Mary,” “O Shenandoah,” “Old Man River,” and “Down By the Riverside.”

The band are currently preparing for their Christmas concert on 10 December and a few Christmas parades the weekend before.
