As the year 2020 progresses, so does the major health headline of the coronavirus. Originating in Wuhan, China, the virus has made its way to the United States and the United Kingdom alike, as well as the Middle East and Australia. Among China evacuees, anotherUnited States citizen has been stricken with the illness, making him or her the fourteenth American to receive the virus. As of 12 February, the number of cases reported by the Xinhua News Agency rose by 14,840, and an additional 242 individuals died from the virus. This puts the total number of infections at around 28,000 and the total number of deaths at 1,300, significantly passing the death tolls of the SARS virus. However, most of the cases are mild—University of Maryland School of Medicine virologist Matthew Frieman dubbed the virus “a bad, heightened cold.” For now, though, be careful about the kisses given and received this Valentine’s Day, and take careful precautions to avoid being infected.
