Jackson Academies: The Soccer Battle

from Issue 12

The Raiders welcomed the Patriots into the Brickyard on 22 February for the 2020 soccer championship. JA has participated in three straight soccer championships; however, Prep has participated in nine straight soccer championships all nine times, beating Jackson Academy the past three years.

The first whistle blew at 11:00 AM, on a clear, sunny day. JA created many chances to score in the first 20 minutes of the game yet both teams went back and forth for the remainder of the first half. At the start of the second half, Prep started creating more chances to score. The second half also went back and forth, and the score remained 0-0 at the end of regulation play. At this point, JA decided the best way to pursue Prep was to continue sending the ball forward and hope the offensive players would carry and create chances with it.

Two periods of overtime were played, each being 10 minutes long. Both teams remained scoreless in the first overtime. In the second overtime, Prep scored with 6 minutes left on the clock to give them a lead of 1-0. At this point, hope was dwindling. Another goal, induced by a header, was scored shortly after. Both of the goals were by seniors at Prep. This led to a shocking 2-0 win for Jackson Prep, marking a disappointing defeat for Jackson Academy. This makes the Patriots’ tenth championship win and appearance, with JA losing four consecutive times to Prep in state championships. Both teams shook hands like sportsmen, with Prep being awarded the blue plaque trophy, much to Jackson Academy’s chagrin.
